This is the shorter of the two reels (if you're in bit of a rush). The thumbnail for this reel is most interesting. Charles Koppelman, the director of Dumbarton Bridge, wanted a shot of the San Francisco skyline from the Bridge. SF downtown is twenty miles away. We went there several times in prep and you couldn't even see the San Mateo bridge through the haze. But I rented a 600mm lens for the actual shoot just in case and the night before it rained all night and stopped just before we got there. Remarkably SF was visible as a hazy blur and I made it my first shot at dawn. Right after we shot the actual scene the sun came over the Berkeley Hills, caught the skyscrapers with its golden light and turned SF into OZ . I got the 600 out again and that's the shot you see. Remarkably some kind of mirage had obliterated the San Mateo Bridge and it looked like the trucks and cars were floating on air. Walter Murch saw the shot and told Charles he better start his movie with it. You can see it in motion at the end of the reel. |
